The hunt for the world’s thinnest caliber is not a simple time trial, but a true assault on physics: reducing size without sacrificing energy, reliability, and power transmission is an equation that has obsessed manufacturers for over a century. If the 19th century emphasized marine precision and the 20th century focused on wrist durability, it was in the post-World War II period that the challenge shifted to pure dimensional elegance, where thickness became the ultimate yardstick. The Frederic Piguet Caliber 21 represents one of the most legendary chapters in this epic. Born in the workshops of the brand that for decades supplied base movements to some of the most prestigious names in watchmaking, the Cal. 21 is the culmination of a philosophy that prioritizes structural purity. At just 1.73 mm thick, this hand-wound movement created in 1925 was (and still is) a manifesto of precision micromechanical engineering. For the next two decades, the “Piguet 21” maintained its distinction as the thinnest movement ever built, but the race to create an even thinner movement continued. In 1938, the collaboration between Audemars Piguet and LeCoultre & Cie led to the birth of the caliber 9ML, which, at 1.64 mm thick, set a new milestone in ultra-thin mechanics.
A few years later – according to some sources, 1946; others, 1953 – the natural development of the Cal.9ML was the creation of the AP 2003 movement. Its true revolution lies in the spatial relocation of the regulating organs and the design of the bridges, which are no longer simple perforated plates, but three-dimensional structures hollowed out to accommodate the recessed wheels, almost like a bas-relief. Furthermore, the barrel was reduced in size (it still maintained a 36-hour power reserve thanks to its low oscillation of 18,000 A/h) and it was decided not to implement any anti-shock system to allow for the micron-thinning process.
This highly engineered micromechanical machine was mass-produced, equipping dozens of models, and by the late 1950s, it represented a large portion of AP’s in-house caliber production.
This is the historical and technical context within which this splendid time-only watch with a curved 18K white gold case fits.
As is typical of the second half of the 1950s, the forms are simple and devoid of decoration; the minimalist design is evident both in the dial, which is very linear with its applied baton indexes on a silver-colored surface, and in the 18K white gold case, which has a pseudo-rectangular shape with slightly and sinuously curved sides. The watch’s slenderness is also enhanced by the use of an extremely flat and thin snap-on case back, which opens via two protruding lugs.
This magnificent piece of late 1950s watchmaking history comes complete with its original buckle, also in 18K white gold, like the case. On the back, it features the “AP” hallmark inscribed in a small square and the acronym “AW” inscribed in a rectangle. This last hallmark refers to the Geneva-based manufacturer of watch cases and gold jewellery, Eduard Wenger (and not, as is often mistakenly found, Anders Wimmer).
