ANALYSE
Between the 1980s and 1990s, Vacheron Constantin evoked, as it does today, the authentic and refined luxury of Swiss watchmaking. No other brand can match that. The philosophical concept of minimal design marries the use of diverse materials, creating new aesthetics from stylistic simplicity.
This stunning rectangular watch tells this tale.
The dial has a champagne-colored layer with a radial finish achieved through a dense yet light brushing. This golden rectangle features four diamonds at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock, attempting to geometricize the dial’s layout. These diamonds are set in rose gold, which contrasts with the yellow gold of the case and the dial’s finish, further enhancing the composition. The attention to detail is obsessive, especially in the creation of the Maltese Cross, divided into four sections, which embraces the diamond at 12 o’clock, just above the Vacheron & Constantin signature pad-printed in black. The hour and minute hands are the most typical flat Dauphine shape.
The rectangular case is simple in design and recalls well-known elements that are characteristic of Cartier’s refined elegance; however, Vacheron here implements the use of diamonds to adorn the shoulders of the yellow gold case with a dense and apparently irregular pavé. From the conceptual simplicity with which the dial was designed, we move on to a more eclectic opulence on the case sides, which is tempered on the right side only by the beautiful original logoed crown.
Beneath the caseback, the manually wound Vacheron Constantin caliber 1032 beats. It is ovoid in shape, equipped with 22 jewels, and adjustable in five positions to ensure maximum precision.
This wonderful watch of balanced dimensions, complete with its original black crocodile strap and its original 18Kt gold buckle, was sold by the great jeweler Mappin & Webb on October 3, 1985. The original set includes the box and the guarantee of the renowned jeweler.
