Born from the ingenuity of Rolex in the mid-1940s, the Tudor Oyster Prince was conceived with an ambitious goal: to become the indestructible, hermetic, and infallible everyday watch. The public welcomed it enthusiastically from the start, thanks in part to a powerful advertising strategy that portrayed it as the ideal companion for any endeavor. Its success came in 1952, when British Captain J.D. Walker wore it on his expedition to the far north of Greenland, demonstrating its reliability in the most hostile conditions.
Alongside it, in perfect synchronicity, a women’s version was born: the Princess. Produced in parallel, it won the hearts of countless women, especially in the following decade.
The dial has a gray background with a satin texture that frames applied baton indexes, accompanied by a tritium dot. The first Tudor logo stands out at 12 o’clock: a small stylized rose, the forerunner of the current shield which, despite appropriate updates, still distinguishes the brand today. At 3 o’clock, the date is revealed through the characteristic cyclops lens integrated into the crystal. The first-generation hands are shaped like an elegant, slender leaf filled with luminescent material.
The case, nicknamed the “baby Oyster” for its compact size, is crafted from stainless steel and stands out for its attention to detail, especially its distinctively twisted lugs, which define and characterize the overall design of this small masterpiece crafted by Tudor. It retains the original crown with the engraved logo and is adorned with a vintage riveted bracelet.
Beating within this small masterpiece of micro-engineering is the Tudor automatic caliber, also known as the “Auto-Princess.” Its beating heart is a bidirectional rotor, inherited from the ETA 2551 movement, a mechanism produced for a very limited period of just seven years, from 1965 to 1972. With its 21 jewels, a diameter of just 17.5 mm and a thickness of 4.65 mm, this timepiece beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and accumulates a 42-hour power reserve, ready to resume its tireless ticking.
