ANALISI

In the late 1990s, the socioeconomic context – marked by the rise of a new entrepreneurial elite forged in the dot-com boom – forced high-end watchmaking to rethink its strategy. Patek Philippe had launched the Nautilus 20 years earlier, but the industry felt the need for a second chapter in the sporty expression of luxury. The undeniable morphological affinities between the Aquanaut and its illustrious predecessor designed by Genta should not be interpreted as a simple stylistic debt. The reason is more radical: the Aquanaut was not born as a standalone model, but rather as a variant within the Nautilus family, initially conceived as a more elegant interpretation. In 1996, the reference 5060J in gold with a dial featuring Roman numerals debuted, precisely as a variation on a crocodile leather strap attached to protruding lugs, presenting it as a new Nautilus.

Only the following year, coinciding with the launch of the 5060 series, the Geneva-based manufacturer released a press release officially marking the birth of the Aquanaut line, which forsook the elegant crocodile strap in favor of a rubber version (although a metal bracelet option was also available). This stylistically bold and completely original choice was reflected on the dial, which was enriched with a checkerboard embossing. Finally, steel established itself as the collection’s defining material.

The evolution of the Aquanaut can be divided into two generational cycles. The first generation is characterized by a limited number of references. Besides the original 5060 and its subsequent transparent caseback variant, the 5066 (1998), the men’s catalog includes only the Jumbo 5065, with a diameter of 38 mm, also launched in 1998, and the quartz model reference 5064. Completing the lineup are two women’s creations, references 4960 and 4961. The epilogue of this first generation came in 2004 with the reference 5067, a medium-sized quartz model embellished with diamonds. The second generation began in 2007, characterized by a significant expansion of the collection, and has continued uninterrupted to the present day.

The references of the first series therefore represent a fundamental chapter in the history of the model, which is why they are among the most sought-after and appreciated watches by collectors.

This ref. 5060, with its closed steel case, screw-down crown, sapphire crystal, and 120 meters of water resistance, embodied Patek Philippe’s sporty vocation. Its compact 36.5mm case and mere 8.5mm thickness made this reference the freshest and most modern version of the Nautilus.

The black dial with Arabic numerals and luminescent treatment features the signature “grenade” embossing, a completely new surface treatment inspired by the embossed dial with horizontal lines of the Nautilus. The date window is positioned at 3 o’clock, perfectly integrating with the dial’s checkerboard composition. Adding to the watch’s sporty appeal are the large, pencil-shaped hands filled with luminescent paste. The rubber strap also features a “grenade” surface treatment and represents the watch’s most unconventional element. It is a black rubber composite called “tropical,” designed to resist sweat, salt water, and UV exposure. The first-series reference 5060 features a steel clasp signed “Nautilus,” a clear sign of a transition from its predecessor (the “Aquanaut” name only appears on later models).

Under the heavy, six-notch screw-down case back lies the self-winding PP 330 SC movement. It measures 27mm in diameter and is just 3.3mm thick; it has a Gyromax balance wheel, a 21K gold winding rotor, runs at 28,800 A/h, and maintains a 48-hour power reserve.
