ANALYSIS

Few watches are inextricably linked to legendary figures who have shaped the history of sports, and when this happens, these timepieces immediately enter the Olympus of vintage collectors.

When driver James “Jim” Clark won his two Formula 1 world titles in 1963 and 1965, and the Indianapolis 500 in 1965, thus entering the history of motorsport, he wore his inseparable Enicar Sherpa Graph on his wrist. Enicar watches were already highly regarded and used by athletes such as motorcyclists and tennis players, but with Clark’s victories, the brand achieved an unprecedented level of image success.

Clark began wearing his Enicar, both during races and in his life away from sports, in 1963. In fact, in September of that year, he was photographed in Great Britain for the first time with his Enicar chronograph. On October 11, he took it with him for the first time on the track in his Lotus at the official race at Riverside International Raceway. He loved wearing it with a white or black tropic strap. In short, he never left it alone.

This introduction demonstrates just how relevant this Enicar Sherpa Graph MK1 is to all watch and racing enthusiasts.

It has a light-colored dial patinated in a very soft butter-colored tone. The three subdials – which are depressed and carved into the surface of the dial – remain lighter, verging on white. The parallelepiped hour markers are flanked by a dot of luminescent paste. The shape of the hands is very distinctive, known as “paddle” hands, as they have a long stem ending in a square protuberance filled with luminescent paste.

The case is also very typical and immediately recognizable: it has a compact and robust shape, with short, thick, and faceted lugs. It is an EPSA case, with the E. Piquerez watertightness patent, as evidenced by the stylized diving suit symbol on the inside of the caseback. Another instantly recognizable feature is the winding crown, which is emblazoned with the Enicar logo, which stands out against the typical knurling of EPSA crowns.

This stunning watch houses the precise and robust Valjoux 72 manual-winding chronograph caliber with a copper-plated baseplate. It has 17 jewels, a Breguet balance spring, runs at 18,000 A/h, and has a 46-hour power reserve.
