ANALYSIS

To describe this very interesting and unique Seiko, we must start with the movement. In 1983, Seiko revolutionized the movement with the 7A28: the first analog quartz chronograph in history. It was built on a base that did not include any plastic components and was designed around 15 jewels. This high-quality base was subsequently modified and added, such as the date and day (7A38 movement) and, later, the moon phase complication (7A48 movement). Its main feature is a chronograph capable of measuring intervals of time with an accuracy of one twentieth of a second (subdial at 12 o’clock); the subdial at 3 o’clock records continuous seconds, while the subdial at 6 o’clock records the sum of minutes up to 30. Another special feature of this movement is its “split” function: by starting the chronograph using the orange rectangular button at 11 o’clock, the chronograph can be stopped and paused by holding down the orange rectangular button at 7 o’clock. Releasing the button restarts the chronograph. The reset is done using the black rectangular button at 1 o’clock. All indications, including the reminder to tighten the crown, are displayed on an aluminum ring that serves as a bezel.

This stunning Seiko chronograph has yet another special feature: its case, composed of metal and a thick black plastic outer case, can be rotated 360° because it is hinged at the base of the bracelet. It can therefore rotate freely through 60 clicks, allowing it to be used and read the time in any position.

The slate gray dial features a surface texture of small squares, which lend movement and a three-dimensionality to the composition, thanks also to the Hardlex crystal. All the graphics are made with luminous paste. The hour and minute hands are shaped like white pencils with a recess for the luminous paste.

This watch, designed for motorsports, is completed by a beautiful integrated bracelet that closes with a clasp featuring the Speedmaster signature and the logo of a stylized racing helmet.
