In many ways, the TAG acquisition of the Heuer brand in 1985 marked shifts into brave new territory. In the experimental early years in the late 1980s, TAG Heuer looked to produce highly functional sports watches- adaptable to all lifestyles, specifically diving activities. Straying from the colourful, dynamic designs of the 1970s, TAG Heuer’s series of diving watches were purely utilitarian. Beloved by collectors in the current day, the early diving watches were characterised by their enlarged Capstan bezels- easily adjustable when using gloves. Their thick stainless steel cases, yet compact size permits a surprising level of comfort when fastened on the wrist. Its large hands and accents allow for a highly legible dial and an aesthetic which is instantly recognisable. The legacy of TAG Heuer diver’s watches continues today in the famous Aquaracer series. Its design is inspired by the functionality of the utilitarian diver’s watches launched in the 1980s- an ambitious period for a brand with lots to prove. This example is in outstanding condition following a recent service. It is accompanied by a TAG Heuer box with no original paperwork.
