ANALYSIS

In more than 250 years of history, Vacheron Constantin has always been synonymous with quality and elegance. The Phidias collection, born at the turn of the 80s and 90s, is a very concrete testimony.

The name comes from the famous sculptor and architect Greek Phidia, who revolutionized classical art in the 5th century BC starting from Athens (where he was given the task of overseeing the construction and finishing work of the Parthenon).

With these premises, the designers of Vacheron gave life to the project of an elegant but sporty style, which was to be placed as successor of the 222 and precursor of the Overseas. It has in itself all the stylemes of the taste little of the years 80-90: circular case in precious metal, finishings with precious stones, integrated bracelet and complications. Everything had to be opulent unprecedented for the category of watches in that range

This rare specimen is a great example of all this: the reference 47020.

The “sigma” dial is white with incredible guilloche workmanship on the surface. At 12 o’clock there is the signature of Vacheron Constantin Geneve; at 6 o’clock the writing Chronometre Royal Automatic. The hour markers are characterized by the placement of splendid diamonds that give light to the entire system. At twelve o’clock there is the applied Maltese Cross in white gold. At 3 o’clock there is the elegant date window. The hands are in white gold and have a linear and clean narrow pencil shape.

The body of the case is circular in shape with the preciousness of the bezel studded with a sequence of diamonds in line. The right profile has shoulders that protect the beautiful crown branded with the Maltese Cross. It has a thin and serrated profile and recalls the same profiling of the case back, which is another point of attraction of this watch. It is on two levels, with the first (flat) of them allowing the tightening of the case back with the body of the case by means of 8 flat-head screws. This closure solution is typical of Phidias. The upper part of the external caseback (slightly convex) still bears the Vacheron signature and the indication of the chronometer certification. Finally, the right profile has shoulders that protect the beautiful crown branded with the Maltese Cross.

The integrated bracelet in solid 18Kt white gold has a very bold and modern design, made of straight lines and sharp edges, which contrast and play with the circularity of the case. It was made with an interval of polished and brushed links of different sizes, and this makes the overall composition very vibrant. This splendid bracelet ends with a deployant clasp also in solid 18Kt white gold

The automatic caliber is the Vachron Constantin 1126 based on a design by F. Piguet. It has the bidirectional oscillating weight signed by the

Maison and bears the indications of the adjustments and the stress test of the caliber to be certified chronometer.
