ANALYSIS
This elegant timepiece was conceived and created within the Louis Cartier collection and launched on the market in 1973. The design of the Ellipse has not changed over time, quickly becoming an iconographic watch with immediately recognizable features like all Cartiers. The beautiful white enamel dial with black Roman numerals is in exceptional condition. The Cartier signature is in the center; at 6 o’clock the much-appreciated Paris writing. The hands are sword-shaped and flame-blued.
The 18K solid yellow gold case has a pseudo-ovoid shape and is characterized by the juxtaposition of a tubular element above the body of the case. The structural rhythm is very fluid and harmonious, making this timepiece a masterpiece of elegance and style. The composition is enhanced by the original crown with a large protruding sapphire cabochon. The Two Owls hallmark in the center of the outer caseback indicates that this watch entered France twice and was resold on the market as a second-hand watch (first verified by the French Authority on Precious Metals of small imported objects with the Eagle’s head hallmark and then with the Owls hallmark).
The 18K solid yellow gold folding clasp is original, as is the black leather strap.
This splendid two-hand is powered by the Cartier 78-1 manual-winding movement with 17 jewels and a Cote de Geneve finish.
