ANALYSIS

“Rare”: an adjective used to describe items that are exceptionally difficult to find. This is precisely the case with this exceptional 30mm Omega Seamaster. Sources on this extremely rare reference are very limited. Brand enthusiasts have studied it and report a very limited number of pieces produced with two different reference numbers (2976-1 and 2976-2), most likely destined for the Far Eastern market. This splendid piece originates from that very part of the world, having been sold in Singapore, Malaysia. This is confirmed by the archive extract, which also provides the exact production date: December 21, 1959.

Aside from its rarity, this watch is extremely beautiful and captivating.

Its very large, light-colored, slightly patinated dial is formally very clean, almost simple. Its entire surface is characterized by large, sharp, parallelepiped-shaped hour markers, which have a black onyx insert in the center. The same application is found on the dauphine-shaped hands, which also feature a cutout with black onyx. The Omega signature is located in the center at 12 o’clock; At 6 o’clock, the Seamaster logo stands out, characterized in these two rare references by a hooked “S” and a truncated “r.”

The massive 38mm three-piece steel case is also a masterpiece of clean lines. The lugs are long and feature a smooth transition between surfaces. The right side features the beautiful logoed crown, typically shaped into four sections for enhanced grip. The outer caseback features the splendid Seahorse medallion, the hallmark of Omega’s Seamaster line: it is still intact and brilliant with its embossed finish. Inside the caseback is the reference number, the classic Omega logo, and the casemaker’s stamp, the famous “HF,” an acronym for Huguenin Frères, which has created some of the most iconic watch cases of all time. Completing the overall design of this incredible case of incredible dimensions is the original bracelet with its logo clasp.

Beneath the caseback lies another marvel: the in-house automatic caliber 501. This automatic caliber runs at 19,800 vph, is wound by a bidirectional rotor, and has been in production since 1955. This movement measures 28.5mm in diameter, has 20 jewels, and features a swan-neck micro-adjustment.
