ANALYSIS
When we hear about oversized crowns, we immediately think of it: the Calypsomatic.
This model was launched in 1962 with the reference 5913 and then evolved over the following years, following its enormous, immediate commercial success. It’s the ultimate diver’s watch, featuring a massive 37mm case, a bidirectional rotating bezel, a screw-down case back, an exceptionally large screw-down crown, highly precise and durable self-winding calibers produced on a large scale by ETA, and a guaranteed depth rating of up to 20 ATM.
The reference 7986 represents the fifth generation of the successful model and was produced in the late 1960s.
The dial of this beautiful piece is a Type III, featuring the small Titus logo and signature at 12 o’clock. This is the version with a gilt-lacquered dial. The dial base is therefore glossy black and the graphics are gold. The tritium hour markers are “buckshot” type, except at 12 and 6 o’clock, where they feature a sharp triangle and a narrow rectangular hour marker, respectively. At 3 o’clock is the date window with a red date display and a “magnifying glass” for immediate readability even underwater. The hands are classic Calypsomatic Type IV: the hour hand is “Mercedes” style; the minute hand is pencil-shaped; and the seconds hand is “lollipop.” All three feature a tritium pocket. The dial is surrounded by a bidirectional rotating bezel with a black lacquered insert.
The 37.5mm stainless steel case is compact yet sleek. The large knurled crown, with its logo on the top, stands out on the right side, lending a distinctive touch to the design of this legendary model. The screw-down caseback features the reference number, Titus’ signature, and technical details on its outer face. This piece of sea diving history is completed by a beautiful stainless steel bracelet with a Titus-branded clasp.
The movement that powers the hands and date of this iconic Diver is the robust and precise ETA 2472. This caliber is 11.5 lignes, has 25 jewels, beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour and has a power reserve of 42 hours.
