ANALYSIS
In the first half of the 1960s, the production of waterproof chronographs accelerated throughout Switzerland due to exceptional demand. This type of watch was as popular then as it is today. This incredible Wittnauer represents a paradigm of this history.
Let’s start with the overall condition of this watch, which is truly incredible. Its state of preservation is like new, and it looks like it just came out of the factory. The dial, hands, case, and movement are practically like new.
The dial features a stunning dual color blue and red scale that stands out against the light-colored surface. The Arabic numerals at the hours are coated in the original luminous paste, which has taken on a soft, warm cream color. At the center at 12 oclock is the Wittnauer Professional Chronograph signature in a beautiful, modern yet classic font. The three subdials have leaf-shaped hands and are flame blued; the hour and minute hands are beautifully triangular in shape and are filled with luminous paste, still perfectly intact.
The sturdy stainless steel case with a screw-down caseback is compact and thick. The original crown with the Wittnauer logo emerges on the right between the push buttons. The structure of this resistant watch is circular and terminated by four lugs that screw onto each other.
Inside this beautiful chronograph is the robust and precise Valjoux 72 hand-wound movement (signed Wittnauer on the bridge), which was produced from 1938 until approximately 1974. It measures 13″ lignes (29.5mm) in diameter and is 6.25mm thick. The Valjoux 72 has 17 jewels, a Breguet balance spring, runs at 18,000 A/h, and has a 48-hour power reserve.
